Stone Disease

Bladder Stone

Bladder stones form when urine remains in the bladder and becomes concentrated, usually because the bladder is not emptying completely.

Symptoms

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Interrupted urine stream that stops and starts
  • Burning urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Frequent infection

Causes and risk factors

  • Prostate enlargement causing incomplete emptying
  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Long-term catheter use
  • Stone dropping from the kidney

Diagnosis

  • Ultrasound of bladder with residual urine
  • X-ray KUB
  • Cystoscopy
  • Assessment of the underlying cause

Treatment

  • Cystolitholapaxy — endoscopic laser fragmentation
  • Open removal for very large stones
  • Simultaneous treatment of prostate obstruction

Prevention

  • Treat the cause of poor bladder emptying
  • Maintain hydration
  • Regular catheter care where applicable

Recovery

Endoscopic clearance is usually a day-care or one-night procedure, with normal activity in two to three days.
