How to Prevent Kidney Stones in Lucknow's Climate

Stones recur in nearly half of patients within ten years. A few consistent habits change those odds more than any medicine.

Why prevention matters more than treatment

Removing a stone solves today's problem. It does not change the chemistry that made the stone in the first place. Without prevention, roughly one in two patients forms another stone within a decade — and each episode carries the risk of pain, infection and kidney damage.

North India's long, hot summers make this worse. Heavy sweating concentrates urine, and concentrated urine is where crystals form.

The habits that actually work

These recommendations are drawn from international urology guidelines and adapted for the local climate.

  • Drink enough fluid to pass about 2.5 litres of pale urine every day — usually 3 to 3.5 litres of intake in summer.
  • Keep salt under 5 grams a day. Excess sodium pushes calcium into the urine.
  • Add lemon or citrus. Citrate binds calcium and blocks crystal formation.
  • Do not cut out dairy. Calcium taken with meals binds dietary oxalate in the gut and reduces stone risk.
  • Moderate animal protein — large daily portions of red meat raise uric acid and lower citrate.

Know your stone

Whenever a stone is retrieved, send it for analysis. Calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite and cystine stones need very different prevention strategies, and a metabolic evaluation guides medication such as potassium citrate or allopurinol where needed.

When to see a urologist

See a urologist if you have had one stone before, if you have pain with fever, if you notice blood in the urine, or if a scan shows a stone larger than 6 mm.
