Blood in Urine: When to See a Doctor

Painless blood in the urine is the single most important urological warning sign. It should never be watched and waited on.

Painful versus painless

Blood with severe pain usually means a stone. Blood with burning and fever usually means infection. Blood with no pain at all is the pattern that most concerns a urologist, because it can be the only sign of a bladder or kidney tumour.

What the evaluation involves

A complete assessment is straightforward and usually finishes within a few days.

  • Urine routine, culture and cytology
  • Ultrasound of kidney, ureter and bladder
  • CT urography where indicated
  • Cystoscopy — a short outpatient look inside the bladder

Do not wait for it to happen again

Bleeding from a tumour is typically intermittent. It stopping on its own is not reassurance. One episode is enough reason for a full evaluation.
